Chennai – To prepare eight deacons for ordination to the priesthood, they attended “Identity of the Guanellian Priesthood: a servant, a dust off” at Don Guanella Major Seminary June 10-11th. The topics covered during the seminar were Diakonia- dust off, The Holy Identity of Priests, Guanellian Presbyterate, Challenges and Implications in Priesthood, Affective Maturity and Necessary Qualities in a Priestly Journey, and Shepherding Ministry of Priests. The seminar was opened and led by Rev. Fr. Soosai Rathinam SdC, Provincial Superior. The presenters were Rev. Frs. Periyanayagam (Chennai Arch-Diocese), Sekar Sebastian (Professor in SHS), Samson SdC, and Francis SdC. The main synopsis of the topics was: “a priest is the one who is sought after Christ’s identity and his glorious virtues of love, humility, obedience, sacrifice, charity and beatitudes; among the manifold ministries of a priest, he is obliged to renew and rekindle his spirit through affective prayer to God and effective love for the poor. A priest is conditioned to reflect Jesus in everything he says and does; the excellence of priest’s administration is to be seen in highest humility and servanthood; the models of Guanellian priesthood are the good shepherd and the merciful Samaritan; a priest should have higher emotional intelligence to better his affective maturity and formation and a priest should have spousal belongingness to the church and the congregation.” Overall, the conference nourished every participant to be energized on their path to holiness. Toward the end, the deacons evaluated their diaconate ministry on three dimensions: spiritual, human and charismatic. Everyone renewed their thirst for a holy Guanellian religious life. After Fr. Soosai had a personal chat with each deacon, he ended the meeting with a message on the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
