Chennai – A free Medical Camp was held on July 15th for Don Guanella Special School children. Children were given an open invitation to take part in the medical camp. The medication was provided freely and the children and needy brethren of the surrounding area made good use of this chance. Doctors and nurses provided exams, diagnoses and medicine. They expressed their joy and happiness for the opportunity to give their service for the special children. They also added that it is a great blessing for them. Finally, Fr. Lourdu Raj, Director of DGSS, thanked all the doctors, nurses and the staff for their kindness. He assured them of the special prayers of the good children
Chennai – DGSS children participated in LIMCA record attempt by doing martial arts for a set time with more than 1000 school children. Some of our children successfully participated in proving their talents. The officials appreciated our children for leading successful lives by developing their health and knowledge like Observation, Expectation, Awareness, and Presence of Mind, Creative Mind, Rhythm and Inner Feel. Our children received prizes and certificates in imaginary individual lesson and imaginary team lesson performance. They were also given participation certificates for LIMCA Book of Records.
Chennai – Extending charity is the realization of the kingdom of God. Therefore in view of realizing the presence of the kingdom of God, Don Guanella Special School laid the foundation stone for the Residential Home for the Special Children on February 12th in the presence of Most Rev. Anthony Samy, Bishop of Kumbakonam; Fr. Gustavo DeBonis, General Secretary; and Fr. Soosai Rathinam, Provincial Superior. Fr. Soosai made a special request for the spiritual and material support of the project to all present. The celebration closed with Marian sentiments.
Chennai – “Charity is the best weapon by which we can take actions similar to God”. Don Guanella Special School held ‘Food Fest’ on Feb 5th to raise funds and awareness for the special children. The event, which was held at Don Guanella Major Seminary, started with a prayer dance followed by an introduction of the project for the special children. Approximately 2000 people attended. The arrangements and organization by fathers and brothers was meticulous, creating a significant means to find Souls of Mercy for the Works of Charity.
Chennai – Don Guanella Special School had multiple occasions to celebrate and to be happy. To celebrate New Year’s Amazon staff from the online company, sponsored school uniform T-Shirts for DGSS children. They entertained our children with a creative cultural program and various games. Staff and students were very thankful for the generosity of Amazon and the staff members.
Pongal is a festive celebration throughout India, but especially in Tamilnadu, as it is infused with their culture and tradition. On this special day, DGSS celebrated Pongal by sharing Indian traditions with the entire community. We also remembered and thanked God, nature, formators, and all those who helped us to celebrate the feast.
Chennai – A sports meet called, “Special Olympics Bharat” for differently-abled children was held on January 21st with the motto “let me win but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”. Don Guanella Special School students participated, winning the Gold medal in Throw Ball and 50M Running. The well-known actor, Mr. Santhanam, celebrated his birthday with the special children and during the program encouraged everyone to have patience with children and spent the day meeting each school.
Another celebration was in honor of Republic Day of India. LC Project Nagapatinam distributed candle making certificates for DGSS students who were trained in candle making. Two of our school staff gave the training, producing various models of candles for students to get ideas of the concept of candle making. The work of staff and students are praiseworthy.
Chennai – To mark the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister and freedom fighter of India in whose honor Children’s Day is celebrated, Jeevanadi, a private organization, conducted an arts festival at Kamarajar Arangam. The motto of the festival was ‘Let Us Care and Share with the Special Children’. As the part of the event the children of Don Guanella Special School performed dances and songs. Towards the end, all the children were given gifts.
Chennai – A candle-making training which is a Central Government Project for Persons with Disabilities was held at Don Guanella Special School. It was organized by the MINISTRY OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT (National Career Service Center for the Differently-Abled.) Twenty children from DGSS were selected for the training. Two of the special educators from school with cooperation from the government officials and the school program director trained the students. The main aim of this program is to equip the children in one of the arts so that they can earn a livelihood and stand on their own. After the training program, the children were taken to MGM (Dizzee World) for a picnic. Children were assisted by the staff and parents throughout this well-organized program.
Chennai – On “World Mental Health Day” an awareness camp was conducted by the Taluk Legal Service Committee, Poonamallee October 22nd. Seven judges were present from the district civil court. The camp was held at Don Guanella Special School. It was an awareness camp on the rules, regulations and facilities that are provided by the government for special people. In addition, awareness was given to the participants on how to consult officials when the basic needs are not served by the government. After the awareness talks by the judges, time was allotted for the teachers, parents and students to clarify doubts about social, civil and moral concerns. It was an informative and successful event.
Chennai – The first death anniversary of Mr. John, the father of Fr. Samson, SdC, was celebrated by the DGMS community on October 28th. Holy Mass was offered by Fr. Samson and concelebrated by Fr. Soosai Rathinam and the confreres at Don Guanella Special School. Fr. Ligori gave the homily. Participants included the special school children, the staff and beneficiaries from Happy Home. After Mass, a sumptuous meal was served, sponsored by the family members of Fr. Samson in remembrance of his father. May the Lord grant eternal peace to Mr. John.
