Children Celebrate a Saint

E. Providence – Students at Sacred Heart School prepared for the feast of St. Louis Guanella by learning more about his life. Each grade did projects for the event. First graders drew portraits and created alphabet books that used words to describe the life of the saintly Founder. The entire school community celebrated solemn Mass in his honor.

Ascension Day

E. Providence – To celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday, May 25th, the students of Sacred Heart School planned a May Crowning and special Mass. The tradition is to crown a statue outdoors, but this year the weather did not cooperate. Mass and the Crowning were held inside. Fr. Franklin Michael, SdC, who was visiting the Rhode Island Community assisted Fr. Silvio at the school Mass.

First Holy Communion

E. Providence – The second grade students of Sacred Heart School had the culmination of their year-long preparation for Holy Communion on Sunday, May 7th. It is a parish tradition for the children to experience the miracle of transubstantiation on the altar up close to Fr. Silvio. This year there was a special priest present to concelebrate the Mass, Fr. Jeremy Rodrigues, uncle of one of the first communicants. At the same celebration the children in their First Communion attire crowned the Blessed Mother statue following the tradition of the Catholic Church.

Catholic School is Fun

E. Providence – Catholic Schools Week was a fun-filled week at Sacred Heart School. We had Crazy Hair Day, Pajama Day, Principal, Teacher, & Pastor Appreciation Days, and ended the week with a Mass celebrated by our Principal, Fr. Peter. One of the highlights of the week was a volleyball game where the Faculty/Staff/PTO plays the 8th grade. It was a close game but the 8th graders won!

Parish Feast and Festival

E. Providence – The beginning of June is a busy time at Sacred Heart Church and School. Not only does the school year come to an end, but the Parish celebrates it’s feast with a festival. At the end of the academic year, students received new Chromebooks to assist with learning. There was also an end of the year concert in honor of the 150th anniversary of St. Guanella’s ordination. Some of the staff members said a fond farewell as they departed from service at the school and moved onto new endeavors. Part of the Parish festival is the big raffle which all of the students sell tickets for. The students with the highest sales were treated to a special lunch. The entire community comes out to enjoy the festivities of the festival including carnival games and of course the Eucharistic procession.

A Parade of Saints

E. Providence – An annual event for the Feast of All Saints at Sacred heart School is the Parade of Saints. The younger children each dress up as their favorite saint for the procession from the school over to Church for the Eucharistic celebration. It gives the students a chance to learn about their heavenly ancestors.

Another School Year Underway

IMG_7591E. Providence – To open the new school year, Fr. Silvio gave the first graders of Sacred Heart School a blessing during the beginning of the year Mass. He also wanted them to learn about the Pope, so Fr. Silvio gave the class a book about Pope Francis prior to his visit to the US. Their teacher read parts of it to the class throughout his visit. They read that Pope Francis’ favorite part of the day is in the evening when he prays in front of the Blessed Sacrament for an hour of Adoration. They were excited to hear that because they go to Adoration in October and May! So they took Flat Francis with them to the church, stopping to take a picture with the St. Louis Guanella statue, too. The first graders participate in a year-long Flat Stanley project so they couldn’t resist introducing Flat Francis to their Flat Stanleys!

Another School Year Ends

Silvio De Nard celebrated Mass which included the presentation of their diplomas. They expressed their joy after Mass when they all tossed their caps high, ecstatic that they have made another milestone in their life’s journey. The remainder of the students officially closed the school year with Mass celebrated by Fr. Silvio on June 19th. They were each given a blessing to carry them through the summer.
