Chelsea – The residents of St. Louis Center were once again treated to an annual barbeque and kickball game by the Chelsea Knights of Columbus on Thursday August 23, 2012. This annual event provides our local Knights with an opportunity to serve our residents, and have a great time in the process. After giving the cooks of SLC the night off, the Knights and their wives helped to cook a great summertime meal of hamburgers and cold salad, which was followed by desserts and a kickball game. As you can see from the happy faces, everyone present enjoyed the event.
Chelsea – The month of August was filled with baseball memories for the residents of St. Louis Center, as they were entertained by the Detroit Tigers on August 7th, and then by the Lansing Lugnuts ten days later on August 17th. In an exciting game against the New York Yankees, the Detroit Tigers won 6-5, which made for a great ride back to Chelsea for our residents. The Lansing Lugnuts played the Fort Wayne, IN, “Tin Caps,” and lost a heartbreaker 7-6 on the 17th, however since this was “Vocations Night,” all the priests and religious who were present at the game were honored by the Lugnuts during pre-game ceremonies.
Chelsea – As the summer months roll on, so do the golf outings in support of St. Louis Center. As evidence of their importance, these outings provide opportunities for local members of the community throughout Michigan to help St. Louis Center financially, while having a good time in the process.
The Memorial Golf Outing celebrated its 25th year in 2012, and approximately 64 golfers participated in this event, held at Pierce Lake Golf Course in Chelsea, MI. This year’s outing was held in memory of Therese Doll, the wife of longtime supporter Don Doll, and mother of Board Chairman Larry Doll.
After competing on the golf course, the players enjoyed a dinner of Italian sausage, hamburgers, and cold salads. Along with the great golfer gifts, everyone left knowing that their support went a long way towards helping the residents of St. Louis Center lead a great quality of life for another year.
Fr. Joseph Rinaldo, SdC., Provincial Treasurer of the Divine Providence Province, was honored at a special dinner on Monday June 25, 2012 attended by fifty people at Paesano’s Restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI. This was the second year for this fundraising dinner, offered to support the operations of St. Louis Center in Chelsea, MI.
This year’s dinner featured the foods of Sicily, Fr. Joseph’s home area, and included a five course meal with Spada Putanesca and seared duck breast as the main attractions. Each item was then paired with a special selection of white or red wine.
During the meal, Fr. Joseph was honored by his friends from the local community, who stood-up to praise his life’s devotion to persons with developmental disabilities, and in the end, he received several special gifts. A case of nero d’avola wine, a replica painting of the Dream of St. Joseph by Francisco Rizi, and several premium cigars.
Chelsea– On May 12th, a group of high school musicians known as the Saline Fiddlers brought their show to the St. Louis Center. The residents had a great time. They enjoyed the music and dancing. A piece was written especially for the residents at SLC…it was a medley of Michael Jackson tunes. Lee and Julian went to the stage with a dance of their own; seemingly pre-choreographed in a style to make Michael himself proud. The Fiddlers had a great time too. As a matter of fact, they hope to appear at St. Louis Center as an annual event.
Manila – God moves in mysterious ways, using different people to show His love and compassion. On May 25th, the Kilyawan Boys Choir featured the VOCES AURORAE GIRLS CHOIR in a benefit concert held at Philam Life Auditorium. This year the Guanella Center was chosen as the beneficiary. The residents, priests, seminarians, friends, benefactors and staff enjoyed the performance. “Their voices are like angels singing for us!” a seminarian commented.
